December 2009

Give the world the best you have and the best will come back to you. – Madeline Bridges

With Christmas less than a week away, I wanted to share with you a touching reminder I recently received that generosity is a powerful force that can bring joy to your own life, as well as the lives of those to whom you give.

It doesn’t matter whether or not you are a Christian. On December 25, all of us can find comfort and inspiration in the story of a baby born in a lowly stable who grew up to be a powerful Messenger bringing peace, love and hope to a troubled world. More than two thousand years later, the world is still troubled, yet millions worldwide continue to gain hope from His message. To express our gratitude for the miracle of His birth, we give our Christmas gifts to the people we love most and also to worthy causes that provide critical help to needy strangers.

When we give our holiday presents, we are, of course, emulating the three Wise Men who, after traveling far to find the Christ child, honored him by bestowing the most precious gifts of that time – gold, frankincense and myrrh.  Although kings could obviously afford to give “the best,” one of our most beloved Christmas songs commemorates the delight the baby Jesus supposedly took in the simple gift of a poor child who honored Him the only way he could – by playing his drum.

The lesson I got this week was that no act of heartfelt generosity is too small to make a difference for someone. And no expression of sincere gratitude offered in return is to be taken lightly.  Together, generosity and gratitude create a powerful energy that attracts abundance — to us and to others — no matter how difficult outer circumstances may appear.

As is true of many of my most impactful lessons this year, this one came to me from my friend “Mitch” who is incarcerated in prison. In committing his crime, he used the Internet, automatically making it a federal offense.  As he has told me, there’s no tougher time you can do than “federal time.”  I’m often shocked and dismayed at the stories he relates to me of the conditions inmates must endure – far more serious than “overcrowding.”  The food is terrible, to the point that Mitch considers it a four-star meal when I buy him a packaged sandwich and chips from the vending machines on my monthly visit.

This time, Mitch’s letter told me about another inmate whose need was even greater than his own and the life-changing gift Mitch was able to give him, despite his own limited means.  You see, inmates must buy ALL the necessities of daily life from the prison commissary, such as razors, soap, aspirin, boots — everything except their three awful meals a day, bedding and uniforms.  Yet, while these items cost just as much as they do at your neighborhood grocery store, the wages inmates make from their prison jobs such as carpentry, laundry, food preparation, etc., are miniscule.  Some men make only $5 a month.  So, if an inmate doesn’t have friends or family to send them additional funds, they are pretty much relegated to living like someone in a Third-World country.

Mitch is very grateful to have the financial and emotional support of friends and family, who know him to be a kind, loving and intelligent young man who made a very stupid mistake, took responsibility for what he did, and is now trying to live the best life he can and help those around him as much as he can for the duration of his sentence. He is also a trained Life Coach, which helps him enormously with managing his emotions and attitude. He also has the tremendous incentive of a loving fiancé and adorable two-year-old child who visit him regularly and are counting the remaining months until Mitch can rejoin them.

Many inmates, of course, are not as lucky as Mitch, having neither emotional nor financial support from anyone on the outside.  Their belief that nobody cares about them has made them bitter and cynical and often hair-trigger dangerous.  But there are a number of others, like Mitch, who are trying hard to stay positive and just do their time with as little suffering as possible until they can regain their freedom.

Mitch wrote me last week about the big impact that his small act of generosity had on one of these inmates.  He has given me permission to share it with you:

“Tonight is commissary night and people are milling about, waiting to get called.  I join a group who were complaining about conditions. One guy is saying he shopped already, but at a Grade IV ($17 per month) pay level, he only as $1 left.  He is frustrated because what he earns is all he gets here.

Someone mentions in our group that a new 22-ounce size plastic cup with a handle is for sale.  This is a big deal.  Unfortunately, he doesn’t have one because they are too expensive.  Then I remember that I have an extra cup.  It’s older, not in great shape.  It was given to me before I bought a larger one.

This guy goes on to say he currently uses a peanut jar to drink his coffee in the morning.  This is the universal ‘cup’ of federal prison.  Someone else recommended using the jelly container, which he jokingly called his ‘jelly coffee.’  I remember using peanut jars and they’re awful.  First, you have got to eat salty peanuts for over a week.  Then, you wash it out.  When you drink out of it, it dribbles all over because of the large diameter opening.

I offer the guy my old cup and he says, “OK!”  I run back and give it to him.  His face LIGHTS UP – I’ve never seen someone so excited!  It’s like in coaching when you ask someone to change their body posture to see how it changes the way they feel.  This guy stands tall and says, ‘I don’t care about (whatever the group had been complaining about) – I have a CUP!’  It’s an absurd sentence, if you are on the outside. To you, the equivalent would be if I handed you a $50 bill for no reason.

I found out he won’t be going home any time soon.  He ‘broke off a 20 piece,’ as they say – a 20-year sentence.  So that cup found a permanent home and I made a difference.  I walked away saying to myself, ‘It was only a cup.’  But to someone who can’t afford a cup I gave him the key to the city, so to speak.”

The impact on that man’s life – both physically and emotionally — from Mitch’s simple “cup of kindness” is proof to me that the little drummer boy makes just as important a contribution to the world as the wisest king.  It’s not the size of your gift that matters to someone; it’s your generosity of spirit that transforms their world.

In closing, I want to pass along a poem that my minister shared with us last Sunday about how your simple acts of generosity can create more abundance in your own life:

It is More Blessed to Give

By Helen Steiner Rice

The more you give, the more you get.

The more you laugh, the less you fret.

The more you do unselfishly, the more you live abundantly.

The more of everything you share, the more you’ll always have to spare.

The more you love, the more you’ll find

That life is good and friends are kind.

For only what we give away enriches us from day to day.

I wish you and your loved ones a peaceful, healthy and very prosperous Holiday Season and New Year!  I will speak with you again on January 4 about how you can create your 2010 to be everything you want it to be!________________________________________________________________________________________

“I don’t know anything about luck.  I’ve never banked on it, and I’m afraid of people who do.  Luck to me is something else; hard work and realizing what is opportunity and what isn’t.” – Arnold Bennett

“Well, Punk, do you feel lucky?”  — Dirty Harry

In last week’s blog, I shared with you part of the fascinating psychological explanation given by Dr. Richard Wiseman for why some people appear to be inherently “lucky,” while others seem to be constantly plagued with one bad break after another. What some call “luck” is actually a learned behavior, and therefore you can learn to be lucky!

Dr. Richard Wiseman, you will recall, is the psychologist at the University of Hertforshire in England who created a study he called The Luck Project, in which he scientifically explored why some people seem to live such charmed lives. His aim was to develop techniques to enable others to enhance their own good fortune. The main findings from his research have been published in Prof. Wiseman’s book The Luck Factor.  What follows is the final excerpt from a short paper he published on the Internet in 2003 in which he explained the key concepts of his findings.

In the second half, I also quote Dr. Wiseman’s words verbatim, although I use American spellings, have re-formatted the text for clarity, and added my own bolding for emphasis:

“My research revealed that lucky people generate good fortune via four basic principles:

1) They are skilled at creating and noticing chance opportunities

2) They make lucky decisions by listening to their intuition

3) They create self-fulfilling prophesies via positive expectations

4) They adopt a resilient attitude that transforms bad luck into good.

I wondered whether these four principles could be used to increase the amount of good luck that people encounter in their lives.  To find out, I created a ‘luck school’ – a simple experiment that examined whether people’s luck can be enhanced by getting them to think and behave like a lucky person.

I asked a group of lucky and unlucky volunteers to spend a month carrying out exercises designed to help them think and behave like a lucky person.  These exercises helped them spot chance opportunities, listen to their intuition, expect to be lucky, and be more resilient to bad luck.

One month later, the volunteers returned and described what had happened.  The results were dramatic: 80 percent of people were now happier, more satisfied with their lives and, perhaps most important of all, luckier.  While lucky people became luckier, the unlucky had become lucky.  Take Carolyn, whom I introduced at the start of this article. [See Blog 79 for details].  After graduating from ‘luck school,’ she had passed her driving test after three years of trying, was no longer accident-prone and became more confident.

In the wake of these studies, I think there are three easy techniques that can help to maximize good fortune:

1)     Unlucky people often fail to follow their intuition when making a choice, whereas lucky people tend to respect hunches.  Lucky people are interested in how they both think and feel about the various options, rather than simply looking at the rationale side of the situation.  I think this helps them because gut feelings act as an alarm bell – a reason to consider a decision carefully.

2)     Unlucky people tend to be creatures of routine.  They tend to take the same route to and from work and talk to the same types of people at parties.  In contrast, many lucky people try to introduce variety into their lives.  For example, one person described how he thought of a color before arriving at a party and then introduced himself to people wearing that color.  This kind of behavior boosts the likelihood of chance opportunities by introducing variety.

3)     Lucky people tend to see the positive side of their ill fortune.  They imagine how things could have been worse.  In one interview, a lucky volunteer arrived with his leg in a plaster cast and described how he had fallen down a flight of stairs.  I asked him whether he still felt lucky and he cheerfully explained that he felt luckier than before.  As he pointed out, he could have broken his neck.”

There you have it:  Some very interesting science-based observations to help us understand what “luck” really is.  Far from being the result of blind chance or the Universe favoring one person over another, what really causes “lucky” people to get all the “good breaks” stems from a few logical, easily-learned techniques.

Dr. Wiseman’s explanation also helps me better understand the reason for the amazing success record of the simple system I have developed to help my Practical Prosperity Coaching © clients create something they deeply desire, based on the Law of Attraction’s three simple steps for manifesting:

1)     ASK for what you want, clearly and specifically.

2)     BELIEVE that it is possible, and don’t worry about HOW it will come to you.

3)     Be willing to RECEIVE it when it comes, and it often comes in unexpected “packages” at unexpected times.

I always explain to my clients that when they adhere to these steps, they are opening themselves up to receiving new, synergistic, easy and elegant answers to how to fulfill their Intention.  But they must stop blindly following their habitual, ROUTINE way of thinking and acting, and begin consciously opening their minds up to brand new possibilities.  They must turn on their manifesting radar and tune into their inner wisdom and intuition in order to receive the messages the Universe is trying to send them about HOW they can most easily and effortlessly fulfill their Intention. People who are stuck in a mental “rut” cannot pick up these subtle messages that can come from their own intuition speaking quietly to them, or even a stranger they meet by seemingly “random chance.”

For a long time, a client of mine had been seeking an exciting and financially rewarding career or business opportunity, but with “ no luck.”  As a result, he had fallen into quite a rut of daily routine, doing minimal work that paid the bills but didn’t excite or fulfill him. One of the few things that got him off the couch was socializing with his wide network of friends. A couple of months ago, he attended a friend’s party, where he struck up a conversation with a stranger.

As they chatted about the gentleman’s very upscale, unusual business, my client gradually realized that he himself possessed exactly the unique combination of bi-lingual language skills, intimate cultural understanding and personal contacts that this businessman needed to introduce his product to China — a huge potential market, but one fraught with peril for Westerners who do not understand the language and customs. And China is virtually impenetrable without a friendly personal contact to help one navigate its complex political and social system.

My client pursued the project, and just returned from a trip to China with the businessman to begin exploring the possibilities of introducing his unique product there. If the deal goes through, my client stands to make a lot of money, but even more important to him, he is enjoying using his unique skill set and loves the challenge of the project. When my client went to that party, business was the last thing on his mind, but he created his own “luck” when he seized an unexpected opportunity that suddenly presented itself.

People who are open and receptive and willing to set aside their preconceived notions of exactly how and when  their desire should come to them are often very pleasantly surprised by the “lucky breaks” and “happy coincidences” that seem to befall them as soon as they simply focus on their Intention, believe that it will come at the perfect time, and leave the “How” to the Universe.

The last point Dr. Wiseman makes about how lucky people tend to reframe apparent setbacks, is also a very important tip for manifesting your desires.  Because the Law of Attraction tells us that “energy attracts like energy,” people who moan and complain about every temporary setback — taking it as yet another sign that they are cursed with bad luck — are actually creating a self-fulfilling prophesy. Their own negative thoughts and emotions send a negative energy out into the world that inevitably finds its match in other negative people and difficult circumstances and attracts those to them. When more “bad luck” follows, it only makes these “unlucky” people even more certain that they are, indeed, cursed with bad luck.  Fortunately for “lucky” people, this vicious cycle is easily broken, simply by looking for a positive aspect or necessary life lesson inside of every life circumstance, which sends out a positive energy that soon attracts positive people and circumstances that assist them in reaching their goals.

So, you see, you CAN learn to be “lucky”… Just like getting to Carnegie Hall, all it takes is practice

The world is your mirror and your mind is a magnet.  What you perceive in this world is largely a reflection of your own attitudes and beliefs.  Life will give you what you attract with your thoughts; act and talk negatively and your world will be negative.  Think and act and talk with enthusiasm and you will attract positive results.”  — Michael LeBeuf

Do you consider yourself to be generally “lucky” or “unlucky”?

Having been a longtime student of the power of positive thinking and especially of the Law of Attraction, I have come to the conclusion that our thoughts and beliefs have a powerful influence on whether or not life unfolds smoothly and successfully for us.  And I definitely believe that we create our own good outcomes, which sometimes might be interpreted by others as just random “lucky breaks.”

Recently, one of my coaching clients shared with me a fascinating psychological explanation for why some people appear to be inherently “lucky,” while others seem to be constantly plagued with one “bad break” after another in life.  I wanted to share it with you because I believe it gives objective, rational support for the view that “luck” does not come from mere random chance. According to a fairly large and long-term research study, “good luck” actually stems from the consistent ways in which some people think and behave that logically cause the positive outcomes they experience.  What some call “luck” is actually a learned behavior, and therefore you can learn to be lucky!

Dr. Richard Wiseman, a psychologist at the University of Hertforshire in England, created a study he called The Luck Project, in which he scientifically explored why some people seem to live such charmed lives, with the aim of developing techniques to enable others to enhance their own good fortune. The main findings from this research have been published in Prof. Wiseman’s book The Luck Factor.  What follows are excerpts from a short paper he published on the Internet in 2003 in which he explained the key concepts of his findings.

I quote Dr. Wiseman’s words verbatim from the Internet, although I did use American spellings, and added my own bolding for emphasis:

“A decade ago, I set out to investigate luck.  I wanted to examine the impact on people’s lives of chance opportunities, lucky breaks and being in the right place at the right time.  After many experiments, I believe that I now understand why some people are luckier than others and that it is possible to become luckier.

To launch my study, I placed advertisements in national newspapers and magazines, asking for people who felt consistently lucky or unlucky to contact me.  Over the years, 400 extraordinary men and women volunteered for my research from all walks of life: the youngest is an 18-year-old student, the oldest an 84-year-old retired accountant.

Jessica, a 42-year-old forensic scientist, is typical of the lucky group.  As she explained: ‘I have my dream job, two wonderful children and a great guy whom I love very much.  It’s amazing when I look back at my life, I realize I have been lucky in just about every area.”

In contrast, Carolyn, a 34-year-old care assistant, is typical of the unlucky group.  She is accident-prone.  In one week, she twisted her ankle in a pothole, injured her back in another fall and reversed her car into a tree during a driving lesson.  She was also unlucky in love and felt she was always in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Over the years, I interviewed these volunteers, asked them to complete diaries, questionnaires and intelligence tests, and invited them to participate in experiments.  The findings have revealed that although unlucky people have almost no insight into the real causes of their good and bad luck, their thoughts and behavior are responsible for much of their fortune.

Take the case of chance opportunities.  Lucky people consistently encounter such opportunities, whereas unlucky people do not.  I carried out a simple experiment to discover whether this was due to differences in their ability to spot such opportunities.

I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper, and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside.  On average, the unlucky people took about two minutes to count the photographs, whereas the lucky people took just seconds.  Why? Because the second page of the newspaper contained the message: ‘Stop counting.  There are 43 photographs in this newspaper.’  This message took up half of the page and was written in type that was more than 2 inches high.  It was staring everyone straight in the face, but the unlucky people tended to miss it and the lucky people tended to spot it.

For fun, I placed a second large message halfway through the newspaper: ‘Stop counting.  Tell the experimenter you have seen this and win [$500].   Again the unlucky, people missed the opportunity because they were still too busy looking for photographs.

Personality tests revealed that unlucky people are generally much more tense than lucky people, and research has shown that anxiety disrupts people’s ability to notice the unexpected.  In one experiment, people were asked to watch a moving dot in the center of a computer screen.  Without warning, large dots would occasionally be flashed at the edges of the screen.  Nearly all participants noticed these large dots.

The experiment was then repeated with a second group of people, who were offered a large financial reward for accurately watching the center dot, creating more anxiety.  They became focused on the center dot and more than a third of them missed the large dots when they appeared on the screen.  The harder they looked, the less they saw.

And so it is with luck – unlucky people miss chance opportunities because they are too focused on looking for something else.  They go to parties intent on finding their perfect partner and so miss opportunities to make good friends.  They look through newspapers determined to find certain types of job advertisements and as a result miss other types of jobs.   Lucky people are more related and open, and therefore see what is there rather than just what they are looking for.”

I got very excited when I read this part of Dr. Wiseman’s explanation as to why some people seem to get the “lucky breaks,” because I realized that this is the driving force behind a key concept that I teach in my Practical Prosperity Coaching© system.  As you have heard me say before, you must begin the manifesting process using the Law of Attraction by ASKING for exactly what you want, clearly and specifically.  But the next step is often very difficult for many people: After you ask for it, you must then RELEASE your Intention and allow the creative force of the Universe to come up with the best possible means for delivering it, which I call the HOW

I have witnessed over 150 of my clients succeed in manifesting their heart’s desire, often 30 days or less, when they follow this precept, and now I know why.  Dr. Wiseman would say it is because they are being “related and open” to the Universe, rather than scared and attached to focusing on what they already know to do and where they think the answer will be found.

I always tell my Practical Prosperity Coaching© clients: If you already knew the perfect means for manifesting your Intention, you would already have it.  So give up being attached to your own ideas of how it will come, and instead be open and receptive to any NEW possibility that your intuition suddenly pops into your own mind, as well as to information brought to you by someone else.  Chase every seeming “happy coincidence” that crosses your path, and don’t prejudge ANY potential means for manifesting your desire – no matter how unconventional or far-fetched it may seem to you — without fully investigating it.  It just might be the very How that the Universe has chosen to easily and elegantly manifest what you ASKED it to bring you.

I believe that ALL of our requests are eventually answered by the Universe (provided they are for our Highest Good), but we sometimes miss the signals and then complain that the Universe didn’t help us.  It responded with something we weren’t expecting and so we were blind to it, just like the “unlucky” people in Dr. Wiseman’s experiment who missed all the “big dots” because they were focusing on one “little dot,” which represents their own pre-determined and very limited approach to fulfilling their need or desire.

Next week, I will share the fascinating outcome of Dr. Wiseman’s study — his finding that  “…lucky people generate good fortune via four basic principles” and the three easy techniques he developed that can help you to maximize your good fortune.  Stay tuned!
