March 2010

“The world is a looking glass and gives back to every many the reflection of his own face.” — William Makepeace Thackary.

Before I launch into this week’s topic, I promised to keep you updated on how I’m doing with the 21-Day Challenge I started last week.  (And my thanks go out to the many readers who are joining me in this quest to increase our power to create by eliminating the energetically debilitating practice of complaining!)

I’ve known for years about this great opportunity to go 21 straight days without complaining, gossiping or blaming (at least aloud), but this is the first time I’ve actually tried it myself.  Smugly assuming my job as a coach would make it relatively easy, I wasn’t too concerned with having to start the 21 days all over, as one must do, if I found myself uttering any negative language.  As an added precaution, I wore a green rubber band on my wrist as a reminder — green representing the prosperity I knew I would gain if I eliminated all negative thinking.

Well, guess what?  I’m human too!  When my computer acted up on the fifth day, I heard myself (too late) leaving a voice mail for a friend, declaring “I wish Vista had never been invented!” Oops!  That cost me re-setting the clock for another 21 days!  But worse, I said another negative thing about someone the very next day, too!

Well, I am happy to report that I’m now TWO days into my “perfect 21,” and being much more careful to monitor my mouth BEFORE engaging it. So, if you have had to start the Challenge over, know that you are not alone!

This week’s topic is all about the power of gratitude to exponentially MULTIPLY your prosperity.  As I have said many times before in this blog, gratitude is the MOST powerful energy for attracting good things to you via the Law of Attraction (which says that “energy attracts like energy.”)  Expressions of GRATITUDE represent the polar opposite of the NEGATIVE thoughts and words we are striving to eliminate with the 21-Day Challenge.

I have been focusing on pausing throughout the day to express gratitude for my current supply of financial abundance, knowing that is the quickest way to increase it! This week, as I’ve strived to focus on the positive and eliminate the negative in my thoughts and especially my speaking, I’ve received an increasing number of  messages from the Universe that my abundance is growing. But, before I tell you my own story, let me share with you a great story that my husband Rick found on the internet over a year ago.  We don’t know the original author, or I would definitely give them credit:

“Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband’s employer’s home.  My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway and cars costing more than her house…

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband.  He stopped suddenly, looking down at the pavement for a long, silent moment.  Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him.  There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts.

Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.  He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure.  ‘How absurd!  What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?’ Arlene wondered.

Throughout the dinner, the entire scene nagged her.  Finally, she could stand it no longer.  She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value.

A smile crept across the man’s face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see…

‘Look at it!’ he said.  ‘Read what it says.’ She read the words, ‘United States of America.’

‘No, not that; read further.’

‘One cent?’

‘No, keep reading.’

‘In God We Trust?’

‘Yes! Whenever I find a coin, I see that inscription.  It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it!  God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him!  Who am I to pass it by?  When I see a coin, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at the moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him.  For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold.  I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me.  Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!’”

Last Thursday, when I was out on my morning walking meditation, I spotted a penny on the sidewalk.  Like the boss in the story, I always stoop down and pick up any change I find on the ground – even a lowly penny.  As I pick it up, I express gratitude aloud for the abundance that coin represents: “Thank you, God, for this Penny from Heaven you dropped here to remind me that abundance is all around me, if I will simply open my eyes to see it!”

As I was saying these words, I noticed a second penny lying just a few inches from the first. Wow –a  DOUBLE blessing!  And as I picked the second one up, I saw a third and a fourth….Finally, I stood up and looked all around me, to discover that I had already stepped over many pennies all around me!  I expressed gratitude as I picked up each one – 16 in all! That’s the biggest Pennies from Heaven abundance reminder I’ve ever gotten at one time, and I was delighted!

The very next day, as I walked to the market, I told God, “Thank you for Your abundance message yesterday!  If you have an even bigger reminder for me today, I’m ready to receive it!”  I had handed the cashier my paper money, and then heard the clank of my two quarters in change coming down the chute.  As I reached into the cup to retrieve them, I was shocked to see over a dollar’s worth of quarters, dimes and nickels!

I scooped them all up and walked outside, smiling and thanking God for the MUCH bigger reminder I had received today. Knowing I couldn’t return the money to its rightful owner, I did the next best thing, and stuffed all those coins into a donation can for the homeless. As I bless others, so shall I be blessed is one of my daily affirmations, so I knew my “pay it forward” gesture would not be lost on the Universe!

It wasn’t!  Today, Rick and I went to purchase a storage rack for our DVD collection, only to find the last one on the shelf had just been marked down from $60 to $13 – AND we had a 10% off coupon for it, so it cost us a total of $11 and change for a $60 item we wanted and needed!  Thanks, God — I got your message!  From finding 16 pennies on the sidewalk to saving almost $50 cash  – that’s what I call MULTIPLIED MAGIC!

So the next time you spot one, I recommend you pick up a penny and use it to remind yourself to TRUST in the True Source of everything you have in your life.  Because one penny appreciated can start an avalanche of abundance!

“If you haven’t got anything nice to say about anybody, come sit next to me.” – Alice Roosevelt Longworth

While this witty little quote has always made me chuckle, it represents an unconscious, self-created barrier to fulfilling our geatest dreams and living our highest purpose in life.

We waste so much of our inner power each day by engaging in petty gossip, griping, taking (and giving) offense and sniping at others’ ideas, behavior and appearance.  From the red carpet’s “worst dressed” commentators, to a member of the United States Congress openly heckling the President during a televised speech, the level of our national discourse seems to have reached new depths recently. While these catty communications are sometimes witty, as many late-night talk show monologues demonstrate, this form of entertainment comes at a price: our quality of life.

If the Law of Attraction is real, and “energy” really does “attract like energy,” then we must understand that the thoughts we entertain, the emotions those thoughts engender, and every word that comes out of our mouths all have a direct impact on the quality of our lives.

One of the greatest Master Manifesters, Edwene Gaines, offers us a chance to enhance our power to attract more GOOD into our lives through taking on a simple “challenge,” which she describes in her wonderful little book, The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity

“When you set goals, you are going to prepare yourself to have and to do seemingly impossible things.  To accomplish these remarkable things, you are going to need power, and you are going to need energy.  And there’s a simple way to get both….

I once heard somewhere that if you do anything for 21 days, it will become a part of your soul.  I didn’t know if that was true or not, but 21 days sounded like a period of time that I could work with.  So I made a 21-day calendar, which I posted on my refrigerator.   And I made the commitment that for 21 days I would not gossip, I would not criticize, I would not complain – not to others or even to myself (if I could help it.) I would not utter any negative language at all for 21 days.  No matter what happened during that time, whatever disaster might befall me, my response was going to be, ‘Well, that’s great.’ And I marked off those 21 days as they passed on my calendar….

During that time, I took a real good look at Edwene, and I was not very tickled with what I saw.  I saw that I was a poisoner who was poisoning my own environment with gossip.  I saw that I was a murderer, because sarcasm is murder.  Criticism is murder.  Gossip and criticism create a powerfully negative energy that really pollutes everything around you.

At first, when I stopped complaining and criticizing, I couldn’t think of anything to say.  I just didn’t know what to do with myself. But then, after some time had passed, I found that I had all sorts of energy pouring into me.  It was what we call in the old school ‘Holy Spirit power.’

All of a sudden, I had so much more energy and time to contribute to the good ideas and projects in my life.  And I began to experience the joy that comes with praising and saying good things about other people, and appreciating more what I had in my life. (Because it’s a spiritual truth that the more you notice the good in your life, the more you get.  The more you notice even the small things – a beautiful sunset, a penny on the street, the pretty flowers in the park – the more you get.  The more you notice the gifts God gives you, the more God gives.) And with this new joy I was experiencing came a great sense of power.  I got to experience what it feels like to be truly powerful.

Are you willing to be powerful?  Are you willing to harness the energy that will propel you forward in reaching the goals you set for yourself?  If so, I invite you to start by taking the challenge of not complaining for 21 straight days.  No criticism, no bitching, no gossip.  None.  And if you slip and say something negative, you have to forgive yourself, and then start all over again for another 21 days.

So on the 20th day, you must be very, very careful!”

A number of churches and social groups across the country have taken the 21-Day Challenge in recent years.  Some of them have even raised money by selling colored rubber bands for Challenge participants to wear around their wrists to help remind them of their commitment not to complain for 21 days.

I have never taken the 21-Day Challenge before. But lately, I have noticed that some petty complaints, gossip and plain old “bad-mouthing” have crept into my conversations and consciousness.  I spend a great deal of my day helping my coaching clients to focus on the POSITIVE in their lives, and so this stinkin’ thinkin’ feels especially out of integrity for me. And it definitely does feel like a drain on my energy.

So I am ready to take the Challenge!  I’ve posted my 21-day calendar on the wall above my desk.  I’m wearing a rubber band on my wrist to help remind me to say only positive things or nothing at all.  I may need to re-start the clock a time or two, but I know that if I can truly eliminate negativity from my thoughts and words through consistent practice, I will put the Law of Attraction into action in my life in a very powerful way.  I’m so excited to see what the results will be!  I promise to keep you posted.

Will you join me in taking the 21-Day Challenge too?  If you share your stories of triumph (and your honest admissions of backsliding) with me, I promise to share mine with you. We can be on each other’s Prosperity Creation Team, and root each other on to victory.

Let’s end on a much more empowering note, with a quote from Rhonda Byrne, author of The Secret, to kick off the 21-Day Challenge:

“Our natural state of being is joy, and it takes so much energy to think negative thoughts, to speak negative words, and to feel miserable.  The easy path is good thoughts, good words and good deeds.  Take the easy path.”

Well, I’m all about EASY! I wish you an energetic, powerful week ahead…Be sure to let me know how you are doing!

“A great attitude does much more than turn on the lights in our worlds; it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.”  — Earl Nightingale

It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day – time to celebrate the “Luck of the Irish”! Do you know where your personal leprechaun is?  Or your own lucky four-leaf clover?  How about your pot o’ gold at the end of the rainbow?

I’ve written extensively in past blogs about Dr. Richard Wiseman’s study of the psychological causes behind “good luck’ and “bad luck.” (See the archives for Learn to Be Lucky and Learn to Be Lucky Part II).  In studying hundreds of people who believed themselves to be either inherently “lucky” or “unlucky,” Dr. Wiseman discovered that the overriding differentiating characteristics of the two groups are all about ATTITUDE

1)     LUCKY people tend to see the positive side of any ill fortune.  They imagine how things could have been worse and express gratitude for what they have and how their life is going.  As Hans Selye says, “Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.”

2)     UNLUCKY people are generally much more tense than lucky people, and research has shown that anxiety disrupts one’s ability to notice the unexpected.  Thus, unlucky people miss the “serendipitous opportunities” that are all around them because they are too focused on their worries and fears.  Sir John Lubbock states, “What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”

The bottom line about “luck,” therefore, is that we largely make our own.  We certainly can’t control everything that life throws at us, but we can control completely how we react to it.  And that alone is POWER beyond what you may imagine.

Your attitude – made up of the thoughts, emotions and energetic vibration that you choose to embody – constitutes a magnetic force that attracts the exact opportunities, resources and people you need to help you in any given situation.  That’s the Law of Attraction in action: “Energy attracts like energy.”  You are constantly drawing things to you that are a match for the energetic vibration of your attitude.

When faced with any problem in life, it is not your job to know how to solve it. The Universe already has the “how” all figured out. All you have to do is work on developing an attitude of gratitude, just like those “lucky” people who can find the GOOD in any situation.  And you must also keep your mind open to the opportunities surrounding you that the “unlucky” people miss when preoccupied with worry, anxiety or self-pity.

This quote by Tom Blandi sums it up perfectly: “Our attitudes control our lives.  Attitudes are a secret power working twenty-four hours a day, for good or bad.  It is of paramount importance that we know how to harness and control this great force.”

So how do you “harness and control” this amazing force you have inside you that has a huge influence on how any challenging situation in your life turns out?

Many studies have shown that people who believe in a Higher Power are better able to remain calm in troubling times, heal faster from illness, and maintain a belief that things will eventually improve for them than people who believe they must rely solely on their own strength and wits.  So strengthening your BELIEF in a force for good outside of your own Ego is a good place to start.

A very powerful tool for creating a positive attitude that I always recommend to my Practical Prosperity Coaching ™ clients is keeping a daily Gratitude Journal, where they list 5-10 things that they are grateful for at the very moment they are writing it.  I make my list of 10 things I’m thankful for each morning, and nothing gets me into a positive frame of mind faster than focusing on the GOOD that’s already present in my life.

Recently, for example, I found myself annoyed at the lower water pressure and smaller shower stall in our new “downsized” house.  I was tempted to pity myself for no longer being able to enjoy the more luxurious shower I once took for granted. Then I remembered the earthquake victims in Haiti and Chile who are living in tents (if they are lucky).  I know for certain that they would be very grateful for a shower, no matter how low the water pressure!  That morning, “a daily hot shower” went into my Gratitude Journal.

I also have to consciously guard my thoughts and to release worry whenever I find my mind visualizing a possible negative outcome for some situation in my life.  The best way I know to immediately cease worrying about circumstances I cannot do anything to solve at the moment is to say aloud my favorite affirmation:

“I claim, accept and expect THE BEST from myself and others 100% of the time.”

These words remind me that by EXPECTING THE BEST outcome in a situation, I am consciously “harnessing and controlling” the “great force” of my own attitude. I know that holding an expectation of GOOD will open my mind up to receive all the serendipitous opportunities, resources and people that are available to me right now – that are part of the “how” that the Universe offers me to solve my problem.

Finally, as any “lucky” person knows, whatever challenge you are facing at this moment, you must always remember that “This, too, shall pass.”  Recalling some past challenge you once thought of as HUGE and recognizing how inconsequential it now seems in the big picture of your life will give you a comforting perspective on your current problems.

My personal favorite memory for gaining perspective on my challenges is the Senior Comprehensive Exam I had to pass in order to graduate from the University of California with a degree in English Literature.  It was a year-long survey course, involving a review of virtually ALL of English literature from Beowulf to James Baldwin that we supposedly had been exposed to in 15 years of schooling.  Senior English majors were warned that we could be asked to answer essay questions about ANY of over 100 books on the reading list during the three big exams.

I remember sitting in my car after the first class, looking at the pages-long reading list, much of which I had never before studied, and bursting into tears. I was absolutely sure that I would fail the course, never graduate, never become an English lit teacher as I had always planned, and my life would be ruined forever.  I prayed daily and fervently throughout that year to calm myself down enough to attend the weekly review class and read as many books the list as I possibly could.

At the end of the year, I’d accumulated two A’s and a B+ on the three comprehensive exams.  The year after I graduated, the University of California had received so much flack that the Senior Comprehensive Exam was dropped from the English curriculum!

After graduation, I went on to take my teacher training and taught one year of high school English before deciding that career definitely was not for me.  All that angst for nothing!  This is the perfect memory to revisit whenever I find myself catastrophizing about some seemingly insurmountable problem of the moment because I now know that it, too, shall definitely pass!

I hope your St. Paddy’s Day is a LUCKY one!  Enjoy a green bagel or a green beer and keep your eyes peeled for the pot o’ gold that you just KNOW is somewhere under your nose right now – you just haven’t noticed it yet!

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens.” — John Homer Miller

Did you miss me?  I sure missed you!  I took the whole month of February off from writing the blog because I was busy partnering with Career and Life Design Coach Sue Koch to prepare and deliver a four-week tele-seminar we call “Resolution Breakthrough: Designing Your Fresh Start for 2010.”  On top of that, my family and I moved to a new home.  This had all the makings of a very stressful time, but ultimately, with a lot of focus and belief on my part, both projects went smoothly and became a great chance for me to expand the limits of my prosperity consciousness.

The tele-seminar has successfully concluded (except for a “reunion” call we’re eagerly anticipating having with the group at the end of this month to see how each person’s Big Juicy Dream for 2010 is unfolding). My husband, son, pets and I are all settling in nicely to our cozy new home.  Last week, I found myself finally pausing to breathe a sigh of grateful relief and ask myself, “What’s next?”

And out of nowhere, a phrase came to me that I hadn’t thought of for almost 2 years: “Fired Up! Ready to Go!”  Do you remember this?  These words became a rallying cry for Barack Obama’s Presidential campaign in 2008. I learned the significance of them when someone sent me the inspiring You Tube clip of then-Senator Obama relating the story of how these words changed the course of his campaign.

So I went back and looked up the clip on You Tube and watched it again last week.  During his victory speech after winning the South Carolina Presidential primary, Obama repeated the story of how this catch-phrase become a turning point in his campaign by re-energizing his belief and determination to triumph.  In fact, these five words were a major factor in him becoming the President of the United States against some very long odds.

Obama recalled that he went on a campaign junket far off the beaten path to Greenwood, South Carolina because he had promised a group of ardent supporters that he would.  He had been campaigning for 10 straight days without seeing his family, and he was exhausted as he arrived in South Carolina around midnight.  His staff warned him that he would have to be up at 6am so they could drive several hours to get to the town.  When he got up, it was raining hard, and he opened the morning paper to read a negative article about him in the New York Times

He got in the car and they drove for hours to the hamlet of Greenwood.  When he got out, his umbrella blew inside out and he got quite wet before entering the meeting hall.  There, due to a mis-communication between the meeting organizers and his staff, he was greeted by just 20 people at the “rally.”  One of them was Edith Childs, a little elderly black Councilwoman in the town.  She was seated front and center, beaming up at her candidate from underneath her big, fancy “church hat.”

Despite feeling very tired and secretly dejected about this whole fiasco, Obama said he believed that “every vote counts,” so he went around the hall greeting each person personally and thanking them for coming.  When he got to Edith, he asked her how she was doing. She replied, “Fired Up!  Ready to Go!”

Then Edith, who was locally famous for her habit of leading call-and-response “chants,” started the crowd chanting in unison, “Fired Up! Ready to Go!” “Fired Up!  Ready to Go” over and over.  Everyone in the hall was getting more and more excited by the minute, including candidate Obama, who felt his own discouragement transform into energy, enthusiasm and optimism.  He told the cheering throngs at the South Carolina Primary celebration that at that moment, he realized that “If one voice can change a room, then one voice can change a city.  And if one voice can change a city, then one voice can change a state.  And if one voice can change a state, then one voice can change a nation.  And if one voice can change a nation, then one voice can change the WORLD.”

That was the beginning of the Obama Presidential campaign taking off. Whereas his first win in Iowa had been considered a “fluke” by many, and Hillary Clinton was still the anointed “front runner” among the Democratic candidates, when Obama went on to win the South Carolina Primary, the tide turned.  One voice was all it took.  One voice belonging to a little lady in a big hat, who BELIEVED in her dream and chose to be ENTHUSIASTIC about her dream, even in the face of no agreement from most of the rest of her nation.

I think the reason these encouraging words popped into my mind just at that moment when I was thinking “What’s next?” for my life is that I have recently been through some big challenges myself.  My husband’s real estate business has been on life support for the past two years, leaving me the main “breadwinner” in the family, while he struggled to maintain two full-time jobs.  We’ve had to make some very tough choices and sacrifices, including giving up the “dream home” that we bought just 3 ½ years ago and downsizing to the lovely little home with a million-dollar view that Rick owned before we married. We found a new place for our renters.  Then we tossed, sold or gave away a mountain of “stuff” that we realized we really don’t need, and moved to smaller quarters, smaller taxes and a smaller mortgage.

We aren’t entirely out of the woods financially just yet.  But real estate is showing signs of life, and I have been blessed with many coaching referrals from my past clients and lots of love and support from my dear friends and extended family.  The greatest gift is that Rick and I have learned first-hand that ABUNDANCE means far more than mere money.  We are abundant in love, fun, support, optimism, faith and opportunity.  If a black man named Barack Hussein Obama can become President of the United States, then we can’t deny we are living in a land of unlimited opportunity to fulfill our dreams!

So now that a whole new year and new decade stretch out before all of us, the question is, “What are YOU going to make of it?”  Are YOU fired up and ready to go in pursuing your Biggest Dreams for YOUR life?  Or has your spirit already fallen victim to “resolution resignation”?

As I look forward to each new day, week, month and year, I feel a renewed optimism, enthusiasm and gratitude for the many opportunities for personal growth and success that life provides each of us when we are willing to simply BELIEVE in our dreams and leave the “How” up to the Universe.  I have chosen my theme for 2010 to be “The Year of the Miraculous Comeback” for myself, for our country and for the World.

And I AM “FIRED UP and READY TO GO”!  I hope you are too!
