You need to be aware of what others are doing, applaud their efforts, acknowledge their successes, and encourage them in their pursuits.  When we all help one another, everyone wins.  — Jim Stovall

I was going to write this week on an entirely different topic inspired by one of Alan Cohen’s daily inspirations. A client sent me the excerpt from his book A Deep Breath of Life, which I thought it was so wonderful, I was going to give you the link to Alan’s website so you could check out his work for yourself.

While I was looking over his website, I glanced at his monthly Newsletter page and noticed a link to a YouTube video that Alan promised would be inspiring.  Boy was it.  I was instantly flooded with tears by this five-minute excerpt from a longer movie about how a handicapped veteran was able to completely transform his physical and mental state with nothing but his unshakable persistence.

Arthur, a former paratrooper in the Gulf War, was severely disabled by a back injury while parachute jumping. First confined to a wheelchair and later able to walk only with cumbersome leg braces and crutches, Arthur was told by doctors for 15 years that he would never walk normally again. He gained over 100 pounds and felt like giving up on himself and on life.

Finally, he asked for help. Several yoga instructors turned him down, undoubtedly thinking there was no way his broken body could perform yoga.  But one didn’t give up on Arthur. Diamond Dallas Page decided to help Arthur try.  With just one human being willing to take a chance with him, Arthur started practicing yoga. Slowly, painfully, falling often, but never giving up, he gained strength, stamina and balance. Ultimately, Aurthur lost 140 pounds in 10 months. When you see what he does in the final frames of the video, you won’t believe your eyes.

Are you feeling discouraged and considering giving up on your dream?  Arthur says in the video, “Never underestimate what you can accomplish when you believe in yourself.”  Because he didn’t give up on himself, Arthur attracted the perfect resource he needed to help him with his quest.

This video is also a powerful reminder that the Universe also needs YOU to become someone else’s “how” to enable them to reach their dreams. Just your warm smile and a hug or a handshake can encourage someone to keep on pursuing his or her dream for one more day.  Giving of your time, treasure and talents in any ways you are able — large or small — can turn someone’s life around.

If you watch this remarkable little video, I promise you will never forget Arthur’s story.  May it inspire you to keep pursuing your own dreams and to help someone else who may be close to giving up on theirs.  Who do you know who needs to hear “I believe in you” today? Call them up, email them or meet them for coffee and tell them you do.

“Keep your dreams alive.  Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication.  Remember, all things are possible for those who believe.” – Gail Devers

Have you had any moments recently when you’ve felt less than passionate about pursuing your Big Dream?  I think it happens to all of us at some time or another with a dream that seems to be taking its sweet time to manifest despite our dedicated efforts.

Whenever one of my clients comes to a coaching session in the mood to complain, express exasperation or confess to feeling fatigued about their pursuit of their perfect mate, their perfect home, their ideal job, or their dream of financial independence, I let them vent a bit.  Then I ask them, “Tell me again….What is your WHY for pursuing this dream?”

That makes them pause, and as they tell me about their WHY, their passion for their dream re-ignites.  Then, it gradually dawns on them that they got  so caught up in the details and daily challenges of pursuing their dream, they temporarily lost sight of what made them want it in the first place.

I learned this great saying from the classroom leader of one of the personal development courses I took from Landmark Education: “Context is decisive.”  That means that the reason behind what we are doing makes all the difference in the actions we will take and therefore the results we will get.

To illustrate, he shared this story: A man passing a huge construction work site walked up to a worker and asked him, “What are you doing?”  Annoyed at being interrupted, the scowling worker wiped his brow and replied, “I’m breaking my back chiseling this stone.”  Then the man walked up to a second stonemason who was whistling as he chiseled a large piece of stone and asked him the same the same question.  The worker looked up and replied with a smile, “I’m building a cathedral to the glory of God!”

With their very different contexts, which worker likely had the most compelling reason to get up every morning and do his work?  Which one do you imagine felt most passionate about pursuing his purpose, using his own special skills and abilities?

Not every step of your Big Dream is going to be fun, exciting or effortless.  Some parts may feel quite challenging. Every dream worth pursuing takes dedication, persistence and most of all belief – in yourself and in your dream.  What keeps me going in those moments when my best efforts don’t seem to be showing tangible results is simply remembering my WHY.

The next time you are feeling discouraged about the progress of your dream, I invite you to try this: Pause. Relax. Take a few deep breaths. Close your eyes and get quiet.  Then spend a few moments visualizing in vivid detail in your mind’s eye exactly how you and those you care about will be living your lives when your Big Dream is fulfilled. That vision is your WHY.  Finally, before you open your eyes, say a heartfelt “Thank You,” knowing your Big Dream IS on its way to you right now and that the Universe is your #1 ally.

For an additional boost, I invite you to watch this compelling web interview with Mastin Kipp, a 28-year-old “Old Soul” who manifested his own Big Dream far beyond what he could have foreseen. He succeeded against all odds and the advice of his parents, simply by staying focused on his WHY of blessing others and living  his purpose.  Settle down with a beverage, relax and spend 27 inspiring minutes hearing his story.  It will help you reconnect to your own WHY, and you will probably want to watch it more than once! http://www.marieforleo.com/2012/06/live-your-purpose/

“Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.” – Robert Brault

My fellow coach, Sue Koch, and I regularly present tele-seminars about how to fulfill your Big, Juicy Dreams.  And we always remind our participants that “the fastest way is through FUN and PLAY.”

It’s true.  If you simply spend some time appreciating and enjoying every little miracle of your daily life, you invariably will develop a more positive attitude and send more positive energy to everyone and everything around you.

The two most powerful emotions for creating positive energy (which of course, will draw back to you MORE positive people, things and circumstances via the Law of Attraction), are love and gratitude.  If we just open our eyes and look around, we will recognize countless things to love and be grateful for right here, right now.

You don’t have to wait for “someday when….” to begin loving your life and having a blast.  There are a million happiness-makers surrounding you right now in your home, your workplace, your driveway, backyard and even your closet!  We have so MUCH to be grateful for, and so little to complain about, don’t we?

I don’t care what the numbers in your bank account say, if you have a bank account, you are ahead of most of the world’s population!  I vividly recall my astonishment at receiving a handwritten list of 100 things my friend said he was grateful for in his life at that moment — and he was incarcerated in federal prison at the time!

Especially now, in the middle of wonderful Summertime, it’s easy to find so many things to delight and entertain us that are either free or very low-cost. How about enjoying a summer blockbuster movie matinee in an air-conditioned theater? Or taking a walk on the beach — alone or with a special someone? Or pack a picnic dinner to eat in the park while listening to a (free) summer concert. And of course, the happiest memories of all can come from simply playing with young children or pets and enjoying their antics.

It’s vital to your happiness to make plans for your future and pursue your Big, Juicy Dreams.  Just remember to pause frequently along the way to gaze with wonder and gratitude at the countless delights to be found right here, right now.

“We first make our habits, and then our habits make us.” – John Dryden

Is it time to ditch an outdated, boring habit or image for a new empowering one that expresses the Real You?  Then you must re-align the Outer You that you project to the world with the authentic Inner You.

To align your outer and inner selves with fun and ease, envision someone you admire (living or dead, real or fictional) who embodies the look, qualities and attitude you know to be the Real You, too.  Then ask yourself, What would she do?” and allow her to be your avatar, guiding your thoughts and actions.

Five years after my 13-year marriage ended, I had done a lot of inner work and finally knew who the real me was.  My inner Wild Woman was ready to strut her stuff and find her romantic match, but nobody else seemed to be able to see her!

After I’d endured months of being bored or ignored by potential partners, a male friend encouraged me to keep believing in myself by declaring, “I am going to start calling you Cleopatra because she was beautiful, powerful and all men desired her.” YES! Cleo was exactly who I was on the inside…and how I wanted to be seen by others.

I began to visualize the Egyptian queen in all her confident, elegant, royal splendor and ask myself daily, “What would Cleo do?” Cleo bought herself a new eye-catching wardrobe.  Cleo ditched her eyeglasses and made the effort to wear contacts. Cleo put on makeup just to hang out with her friends. She learned to flirt again and always walked with her shoulders back and her head held high. In every way, my inner Cleopatra acted like she was valuable — and soon men began to treat her that way.

Within two months, I was happily dating several attractive men. And before long, I met my perfect match on the dating site eHarmony.com.  My wonderful husband Rick and I have been married over six years now and Cleo and I couldn’t be happier.
